Tradition has that the mayor’s daughter, Beatrice, fell in love with the mayor of nearby Tolox’s son, Arthur. They were passionately in love but Arthur was sent to seek his future in the “new” territory of America. Arthur gave his love a sprig of almond blossom from “their” tree under which Arthur professed his love for Beatrice.
They parted and time passed. One day the blossom fell apart and a drop of blood fell to the ground. Beatrice instinctively knew that her love has died: She collapsed and died.
And thereafter for many years the ghost of “la buena villeta” wandered through the ruins of the Castillo, appearing at dusk to the people of Monda who to this day at certain times of the year hear, in the middle of the night, the anguished cries of the young girl who died of love.
